This year I wanted some new Christmas table decor for my dining room so I decided to make a simple burlap runner for our table.  I love how it combines rustic with formal to create a warm, cozy, and cheery atmosphere!  This runner was very inexpensive, and burlap is really easy to work with since you can just fray the edges and not have to worry about sewing seams.  I like having a wide runner on this table so that some of the wood is exposed and place-mats are not necessary.

burlap (long enough to hang a few inches off the edges of your table)

1. Cut the burlap to the desired size for your table.

2. Pull a few strings off the edges all the way around the burlap so it will have nicely frayed edges.

3. Paint a word or phrase on the burlap.

I printed out the word first so I could try to copy it, but I wanted it to look hand-painted and not machine-made so I didn't use much paint on  my brush.  I used metallic paint to add a little shimmer as a nice contrast with the rustic burlap.
