My little guy is kind of obsessed with elephants right now (and trucks).  I indulge his fetish by taking him to the zoo about once a week (I have always wanted an excuse to go to the zoo) and every time I mention "zoo" he starts making elephant trumpeting sounds.  Sometimes he is making those sounds when I come to get him out of bed in the morning.  A lot of times when I ask him what he wants to wear he will make elephant sounds (he does have a truck shirt so I guess he figures he should have an elephant shirt too) so I decided to make him an elephant shirt!

I made the elephant out of applique since it is such an easy way to make a cute shirt!

applique paper (I use Steam-a-Seam Lite)

piece of fabric (I used some plaid flannel)

permanent marker

(optional) sewing machine

To get started, you will need to print my free elephant applique pattern.  This one is sized for a 2T t-shirt but you can re-size it if needed.

If you don't want to make an elephant applique, you can make any shape you want.  If you need some help making your own shape, I think it's helpful to google "free ______ clipart" and find a design you like and you can re-size it, print it, and trace it.

Next, lay the elephant behind the applique paper (make sure the stickier side of wax paper is facing up... if you need more instructions for making appliques you can click here).  Use the permanent marker to trace the elephant onto the applique paper.

Trim off the excess applique paper and then peel off the back and then stick it to the back-side of the fabric.

Cut out the elephant shape and then remove the waxy paper... now you are left with a cute elephant sticker!

Stick it in place on the t-shirt and then iron it on high for 15-20 seconds.

Now the applique is on the shirt permanently (so you can be done now if you're not a sewer) but I like to sew a zig-zag stitch around the edge, for added durability and cuteness!  Another option would be to sew the edge by hand or use dotted puff paint.

I used brown thread to sew the zig-zag stitch around the edge.

Now it is ready to wear to the zoo!
