A few months ago I found myself asking the question "How do I raise my children to have a heart to serve God and serve others?"  Well the answer has got to be to lead by example and let them see me living a life of service and giving them chances to do the same, but how the heck can I do that when I have a baby and a toddler who are still very dependent on me to serve them and I still have plenty of days when I can't even manage take a shower, much less help other people.  I decided that I was not at a place in my life where I could serve others much or teach my kids to serve (we'll just leave that for someday when I have more free time, when we can go on a mission trip together, or when they are old enough to swing a hammer...).  Don't get me wrong, I do think that parenting is a mission from God all it's own, but I felt like I should be doing more.

Recently, I felt God leading me to do a little digging to see how I could help sick children and I stumbled across the  perfect opportunity for a crafty mom like me to help others and get my kids (and my friends) involved!

I was so excited to realize that even though my life is crazy and I feel like I don't have much left to give, there are always opportunities to help others "here and now"!  I wanted to inspire other busy moms to find mission experiences too so I decided to have a month-long blog series:

The purpose of "Moms With A Mission" is to share our ideas of ways that our families can serve "here and now."  Each Monday in November we will feature a post from one of these sweet contributors about everyday mission experiences:

Also I want to hear YOUR ideas, so at the bottom of each post there will be a link party where you can link up posts about mission experiences with your family, and also if you don't have a blog I would love for you to leave a comment to inspire other moms!

My recent epiphany about how I can serve "here and now" happened when I stumbled across the volunteer page for Children's Medical Center Dallas and saw that they were looking for volunteers to make crafts for the sick children!  That felt like such a perfect fit for my skills and my life right now so I jumped at the opportunity!  There are 3 ways that I decided to serve: coordinate our playgroup to make "busy books" for the children, collect books to donate, and have a mom's craft night to make pillows and blankets to donate to the children.  I'm going to show you how the moms and kids in our playgroup made "busy books" to donate!

First, I sent out an email with a list of supplies we needed (crayons, paper, stickers, printed coloring sheets...).  I found some free printable coloring sheets online and put together files to print to make coloring books (I'm happy to email these to you if you want to do this yourself).

On the day of playgroup, all the moms brought some supplies and we got started assembling the books!

We folded the pages in half and stapled them together to make the coloring books.

Our kids are 2 and under so the moms did most of the work, but the kids helped by decorating the covers for the coloring books.

After stapling the books together we glued on the cover-sheets that the kids had decorated.  Then we used painters tape to attach some crayons and sheets of stickers to the inside covers of the books.

Here they are all ready to go!

Now I would love for you to share your ideas to inspire other Moms to find ways to serve "here and now"!  You can either add your story to the link collection below or leave a comment to share your experiences!  Thanks so much!

And be sure to check back Wednesday because I will be hosting a giveaway and offering a discount on the book  "Teach Me to Serve"-- a book about inspiring preschoolers to serve others.
