A while back I showed you how I used an extra tub I had under my bed to make a DIY water table and now I'm going to show you our latest favorite thing to do with these big tubs that I store under my bed to keep the dogs from making it their den!

These days it is really too hot to play outside here in the heart of Texas (unless you are wet, which we do when we play with the water table and sprinkler at least once a day).  This busy Mama likes to find some indoor activities to keep my sweet little guy busy while I take care of baby brother or (if it's a really good day) cook dinner.

I decided to fill one of our empty tubs with something for my son to play in that would have grains big enough to be swept up easily.  When I went to the store they happened to have a really great deal on steel-cut oats but this would also work great with oatmeal, rice, beans... whatever you can find a good deal on.

I keep the tub full of oats and drop cloth under my bed and pull it out whenever we need some indoor fun!  He is pretty good at keeping most of the oats in the tub but of course we get some spillage and I always have to do a little sweeping when we're done, but I think that anything that keeps him busy for a while is going to require a little clean-up.

He is still REALLY into trucks so we played with trucks in the oats this time, but sometimes we use different toys in the oats.

Here are some other ideas of "toys" to play with in the oats:

*sandbox toys- shovel, rake, bucket...

*things from the kitchen: measuring cups, colander, spoons, cups, sifter, bowls, muffin tin, cookie cutters, whisk...

He likes to scoop up oats with the loader and then load it into a dump truck.

Just one more cheap and fun way to keep the tots entertained for hours!
